A visit to Sher khan's kingdom - Jim Corbett

As usual we planned and re-planned multiple times, booked and rescheduled multiple times then set on last weekend to Jim Corbett. (Timely update so that I dont forget!! otherwise a trip to Manali is still sitting aside needs an update from my memory).

Accompanied by my parents from Chennai who have come on a very short stint to be with us, we set for a 3 day trip. Of which 2 days went off only in travel. Saturday morning started from Delhi in our Herbie err... Duster fully loaded, literally. Planned to start off by early morning 6 am. But slow and steady works, piling last minute activities, repacking yet again, dumping teeny weeny stuff, and then why-not-just-one-dosa-each munching :), all ended up at 8, not at all surprised. That gave a small privilege of having the maid wash the vessels !! ;-) All went fine until we crossed Akshardam. The Noida-Gaziabad-Hapur bye pass was a pain. It is a narrow highway with loaded traffic from locals passing by. It so reminded me of Chennai highways. It took some time for us to pass through. Then came the river Ganga at Garmukteshwar. It hurts a LLLLLLLLOOOOOOOTTTTTTTT to see the shrunken Ganga with a thin stream flowing in one corner. If Great Ganges herself is having this condition, cant think of the dryness in Cauvery. Already several states have declared drought. Alo! the heavy rainfall of Chennai is untraceable within not even 3 months. Something ought to be done. It is a sin to waste even one drop of water. Not sure how much of awareness people have got in this regard. Seriously thinking of starting a group that can act upon something like spreading awareness or deepening the ponds or lakes like the ones in Velachery and Pallikaranai.. anybody??

Anyway am digressing. We kept going towards Moradabad. After that our Linda, I mean our GPS (interestingly we have named any GPS as Linda for well, no particular reason) took a detour which was almost exactly opposite to the direction we were heading. It started going towards a place called Amroha. The Here Maps also said the same route. We would have headed for like 1 km, something made us to enquire before proceeding further. We were informed to take U turn to catch the NH once again and proceed towards Kashipur which is a better road than this Amroha, and the best part was that the Tea vendor told us that "haan.. Internet sirf is maarg dhikayega" (yes, internet will show only this route).

So U-turn to NH74 and it was a better route indeed. Reached Kashipur and then to Ramnagar after having lunch. We packed our lunch from home, so not sure of how much of good food you would get enroute. But you have options -you have Bikanerwala, KFC, MCD, Sagar Ratna on the way plus few small scale dhabas. Few big restaurants also there. Meanwhile we tried to trace the route, all the route boards in UP are loaded with posters, especially of BJPs. You need to decipher the names that are vaguely appearing, apparently posters not fitting them so well. (The one in the picture is an exception as we can see Delhi at least. Dont know what is hidden in the right hand side of the board) Arnab... where are you...

Ramnagar is a cute town which seems to be very busy and a central place for towns around it. The Corbett National Park's forest office is located in Ramnagar. You get all kind of approvals here only (of course online). We had already booked for a jeep permit at Durga Devi entrance. But we didnt know that it was only permit and jeep booking was yet to be done. There are sooooooo many people with the green jeep with various rates available for you to book. We did one through KMVN for Rs. 1750 - the minimum fare. There are hell lot of hotels for lodging available, including one inside the forest managed by the department. But we have this Sterling resort, so booked a lovely 1 Bedroom apartment which totally was onto my satisfaction. It was the usual old modeled one with kitchen and oven unlike the ones constructed by them these days. Enroute Ramnagar to Marchula, we saw few huge sambar deers that seem like its fur being burnt. And also some fire like sparkling on the hills. To our shock it was indeed the same forest fire that was reported in the media. It hurt so much to see that at least 16% of forest has been destroyed, it was like for one week and we didnt know about it until that day. See here for few more hurting news :-(

Anyway, we had permit for sunday early morning 5:45 am entry. So crawled in bed early and got up early the next day. Since Sterling was after the Lohachur area (Durga Devi gate), we traced back our path for like 30 minutes. There is no mobile signal except Vodafone (hey though they are costly and non-Indian, it has better service I think. Even during the Chennai floods I was not able to reach ANY of the mobile fones. It was a vodafone number that I was able to reach first, after like 2 days) So with hope we just waited for our jeep to come. By 5:40 am sharp, he did reach. It took few minutes to do the checking of papers and then zoom... err... our jeep started
slowly. We got soooo excited... yes, it was an ultimate experience, really. I have been to Bannergatta (Bangalore) to watch the tigers through a closed bus, to Thekkady (Kerala) through boat ride, Mudhumalai (Tamilnadu) through Elephants... but this is the first time on an open jeep, daring to face the sher khan face to face (which did not happen however but look at us brave people, hey!)

It was twilight time. The coolness and pan darkness was something excellent. Breathed through the fresh oxygen amidst tall trees. With eyes on both sides of the forest we were trying to spot birds and animals. Saw two pheasants flying here and there - we have seen them in cage at Delhi zoo. There were few sambar deers, barking deers and spotted deers. We saw two spotted deer looking for food; pheasant family along with its chick.

There were two barking deers, one was starring at us and the other was munching on grass. So cautious... so curious its eyes were piercing us. Dont know what happened, he/she got alerted for some reason. It vroomed like an arrow not just he did, he alerted his pal too in a jiffy and she too started running. It was very cute.

Kept riding for a long while, hoping to see something. But alas none. Except for few cute birds like White tailed tropical bird, emerald dove, et al. and few langur monkeys (totally harmless and cute), deer we didnt come across anything interesting. We had one guide appointed by the department who spoke English and Hindi. With his broken English he explained about the forest and these few birds and animals that we spotted. Like the tamil movie Pammal K Sambandam, that guide all of a sudden said "enakku arul kekkudhu" (I am hearing god's grace) for he said he could smell tigers near by, an alarm in his mind is going it seems. ha ha ha.. no offences, but we didnt buy it. He made us to keep shush, and waited for few minutes and then he said the god has gone.

Then we took some rest in the forest rest house in a place in deep jungle (yummy tea was being prepared there), came back and looked through watch towers and thats all.

The view was awesome as we crossed the Ramganga river surrounded by mountains. As said, there was very little stream of water in the river. Because of the forest fire, there were thick smokes everywhere in the air. We could sense the burning smell. There was so much mist everywhere.

So after 3 hours, we descended the jeep and our safari is over.
We went back to Sterling, had nice lunch. Took a dip in the chill, dirty swimming pool which kindled our hunger. After hot shower and good food, we took afternoon nap which was like forever. Woke up at around 6 pm... and spent time inside Sterling resort. I had never written comments about Sterling but this particular Tree Top resort was awesome. Its river side view with a mountain near by is tranquil as we stand in the balcony early morning. The lush green and coolness in environment helped to forget the scorching heat of Delhi. The activity room was packed and had Lot of kids who helped to have some fun that evening. After dinner we packed for the next day. Started back next day and thats it!!

This is my favourite picture that I shot -

Reminding of the Robert Frost lines -
"The woods are lovely
dark and deep
But I have promises to keep
miles to go before I sleep
and miles to go before I sleep..."

Here, a dozen tips for you -
1) It takes close to 12 hours to travel by road from Delhi to Corbett. So plan your time accordingly. Start early so that the Gaziabad traffic can be avoided. The railway is a better option - the only train Ranikhet express starts from 10:45 pm at Delhi and reaches RamNagar by 5:30 AM.
Also do not club Nainital trip with this one if you are self driving. It is very painful to keep pedaling for another 12 hours up and down
2) Keep going straight in Moradabad road after Hapur byepass. Do not divert as your GPS advises.
3) Safari bookings or Canter bookings, accommodation inside forest are done in Corbett's official website - www.corbettonline.uk.gov.in. There are SEVERAL links in the net which will fool you to believe as official. Dont!
Better option to open this in Mozilla Firefox than any other browser. Bookings happen 15 days or one month before. Do not forget to take print out of the permit.
4) It is pretty cold inside the forest. Bearable and enjoyable but may be good to pack a jacket for your kids
5) Go for the KMVN to book your jeeps so that they are cheap and reliable
6) They offer binocular for rent - Rs. 100 for the 3 hours
7) Interestingly there are several no lots and lots and lots of Curry leaves plant in this area. We pluck few from the resort and wow... they smell sooooooooo good.
8) There are several other games, adventures, etc. which we didnt try. Pls google it out
9) Wear light coloured clothes so that you dont attract the animals - definitely not orange or flourascent colors. Go for light brown, green or blue. Better to avoid perfumes too just in case. If you are a chatter box, it is very less likely that you may spot any animal
10) Please feel responsible and also considerate - it is our forest and they are our fellow creatures. Let us not harm them. Already the forest has suffered the fire unfortunately.
11) Its ok to pack few dry snacks like biscuits, especially for morning trips but keep it low. dont start munching in the jeep itself and attract the monkeys
12) We didnt get milk and curd that easily in Marchula. Also the shops are likely to be closed by 8 PM. So plan accordingly

PS - Thanks Chinni, my elder daughter for helping me to put together this blog post!!

Amarakaviyam - Tamil movie

Opening Credit -
I never knew that this film was existing. I used to watch Super Singer (Vijay TV channel) years back when it started. But is so boring and dramatic these days. Long back...when I was skimming through channels, caught Srini singing "Aaromale" so fantastically. Couldnt get the actual youtube link but here is something else that satisfies the song; well, actually I chose this link is because there is my favourite Stephen Devessey :-D - youtube link

Yet another day, yet another skimming through the channel and this guy singing "Yedhedho ennam vandhu" in a lovely manner. Never have heard it before. Lovely melodious song with lovely music. Whats this????? I googled it out immediately and found out the original track so excellent and pleasing. I became addicted to the song, I kept on listening to it on regular basis with repeat button turned ON. Then recently to kill boredom, watched the movie online in youtube

Main plot -
Simple love story that very badly reminds us of 'Panneer Pushpangal' though there is nothing common between the two except the location and school kids. Then the usual fight between parents, friend becoming fiend, reading between lines and then parting... forever. A pathos, yes.

End -
Thats all! Why the heroine died and what happened to hero is the cliche climax though the last scene taken in a goose bumping manner.

Plus -
Music, music and music (By Gibran)
Attractive location - Ooty is shown sooooo fresh and unfolded yet
Making it a period movie which makes it sans tech time... adding up all confusion to happen so naturally
The charm of Mia George
To some extent the acting of Arya's brother (whats his name... not registering in my mind at all.. try recollecting, all you get is Arya's face)
I loved both the character and the cast of hero's step father
Perfect choice of parents of the heroine too (BTW isnt that hero's mother playing in TV serials these days??)

Minus -
No chemistry between the lead casts. Hero keeps uttering I love you without any emotion let alone love
Why just the casts in the movie, we are also confused and convinced by the time the hero asks everyone if he is mental
Dont understand why the hero should attempt killing the heroine. I thought she had committed suicide, during the first few scenes
The hero! uh! you could do better boy
Unfitting song sequences except Devadhai song
What a wastage of award winning Thambi Ramaiah

Two questions -
Isnt Mia George a mix of Anushka and old actress Ashwini (there are couple of Ashwinis, I dont know which film did mine act)?
Why all Ooty guys wear Beret?

I liked the irony shown between the friends - one is Kamal fan and another one is Rajini's :-D something that the current phase kids will never understand but its us who fought right?!
Whos that person casting as friend. Cute and very good acting.

My two cents - Overall it is neither 'amaram' (eternal) nor a 'kaviyam' (epic) unfortunately. But the music haunts us. Especially the "Mounam pesum" song by Chitra with interludes by Sowmya. While Chitra singing in low pitch, Sowmya in a high pitch, wow! It is more like an angel keeps revolving around you in white clad gown, when Sowmya is singing. Feels like 'I am in love'. May be that is the only amaram you get in this movie

Barfi Movie

When it comes to movie... I prefer lighter ones only. An Adam Sandler or a Ben Stiller's, or chick flicks like Sandra Bullocks, teenage stories like Lindsey Lohan... or on the other hand something like comedy movies of KamalHassan, Arya, Mirchi Siva... etc. I seldom watch hindi movies anymore.. for one they are too hype these days.. all born rich.. all gone to foreign.. all with at least one Punjabi kudi song.. and/or one western style song loaded with noise..  dont tell me am getting older!!!! example I saw one Action Jackson movie.. and then this Singh is Bling, unfortunately both directed to PrabhuDeva. "enna kodumai Saravana...." - that sums up review for both movies.  Image result for emoticons hitting head
At least Akshay and Amy were something worth to watch in the latter movie.
After seeing movies like 'Nam iruvar namakku iruvar' and one Vijayakanth movie, I feel Prabhu could have survived as a comedy hero which suits him very well. May be that was not the trend then that he couldnt shine. and now he is killing us with these kind of Masala movies.

I had heard good about this movie... which I wanted to watch but didnt... even in one interview some famous film personality quoted about this movie... and sometime back, Vijay TV telecasted this movie - BARFI in tamil. In this dubbed version itself.. it is soooooo good... I wonder how it should be in its original verse. waiting to watch it in Hindi!

There are some movies that affects you a lot. It remains in you for a day or two.. whatever you do.. wherever you go.. you will keep carrying the characters and stories with you.. has it happened to you?? eg., Heavy movies like Mahanadi, Moondram pirai, Metti... etc. Recently I had this feeling after seeing Papanasam movie. (Here also I soooooooo wanted to watch Drishyam in Malayalam, but yet to do it). Could empathize the feeling of both parents who have daughter. It haunted me for like two days... For this feeling only I prefer lighter movies that helps me forget my worries and not the add more fuel to the already firing sad thoughts (whatta hype!! :-p)

Barfi on the other hand is not heavy at all. Yet it haunted me for a day. Is it the story telling, direction or location or the characters or the mere actors representing the character??? I dont know..

After seeing the still with Ranbir and Ileana I thought it was a simple romance movie like Ajab Prem ki... I never knew (not have seen the still) that had PC in it.

Though a period movie it doesnt bore you with you bell bottom pants or hippie wigs which the tamil period films are portraying. And though a movie with protagonists as special people (both physically and mentally), it doest carry any solemnity. It doesnt attract any sympathy. Yet your eyes become soggy.

Ranbir... what to say about his acting? He has kept up the names of his folks and family very well. As a mute yet a very normal person, his acting is perfect. He is very bubbly.. let it be a prank played with his friends, or expressing the love for Ileana, or while expressing the anger towards her, or while slowly falling for PC.. wow... the very expression, followed by combing of his hair before turning back to see Jhilmil at the climax is simply superb. When the police is asking him to start from the beginning (referring to speak from how he met Jhilmil), Ranbir starts from how he was born... that brings a smile on your face, admiring the innocence of Barfi!!

PC has proved her acting skills in this movie. With a bitten lower lips, confused expression in eyes, gestures and body language, she brings in the life to the movie. The minute someone says autistic character or mentally challenged character, we all get reminded of Sridevi only (Moondram pirai). PC has broken that ritual. Not a little bit does she brings Sridevi's shade.
The part that I loved the most was her frightened expression initially that turns out to be joyful later on while Ranbir grabs her in the slab that he uses on the train track. After she is gone, Barfi would peep out of the window when he gets a mirror reflection in his shop from near by window only to find that there was no Jhilmil but someone else's window pane that is reflecting. It brought tears in my eyes. But one thing for sure... had that Jhilmil is in current era, she would have been raped by evil men when she is running away from Barfi. or that would have been a choice if this movie was done in tamil. Thank God, the director did not complicate anything like that.

Ileana has little role yet has done it quite neatly. Expressions of an unhappy marriage is evident in her eyes and grave face. Running away from marriage may be very common these days, but is that so during 70-80s??

Apart from the location, actors and characters the one that took my heart was the music. Very poetic... very neatly done to go along and express the mood of the frame. Pritam has not done any unfitting piece at all and is not disturbing the flow of the movie. For a movie that has both the leading protagonists unspoken, music is the one that should speak. And yes it does!

Overall I simply loved the movie... but not the cliche climax.

Amritsar - I love it - 3

Now I realize why I am always mocked at work place. For a visit done in may month, am writing a review in November!!

So the concluding part is the visit to Jallianwala Bagh. Every Indian knows this place by the very name itself. Every patriotic Indian can relate it to the Independence struggle and empathize this place.

We have a garden here that houses a memorial and has preserved spots of the tragic incident. The entrance to the garden is too narrow to be a perfect spot for the British to perform its action. Several had died in stampede itself.
The bullet marks in the wall is not a picnic spot to cherish! While we get tempted to take pictures of this historical wall, it hurts to see people posing against it in happy note.. playing with the holes.. standing for selife... Is that just me... to go around with heavy heart and get hurt looking at these kids???

The Martyrs well... pity!! in this one only the hapless people who tried to escape jumped into. More like from frying pan to fire. History records over 100 people to have died in this one. The well is now protected with gates. People have paid homage and respect (?) by putting in coins and money inside this haunted well.

There is a small room which posts the various newspaper clipping about the massacre, the after reaction, heroes of the land, etc. are posted. It took hours to read through each and every picture. But Dittu was screaming becoz of crowd and it was too damn hot that we kind of left without reading through in detail.

Thats it. We started back to Chandigarh. We returned back only to stop at the Haveli hotel in Ambala where we had excellent relaxation and delicious food.

Going faceless without Facebook

I have deactivated by Facebook account! That sums up this blog! :)

There are multiple reasons for my action. Top 10 being -

1) Too little friends circle
2) More family members than friends (duh!)
3) Got mixed up career guys and family guys thus anything that I post gets misinterpreted in various manner ! :(
4) Dont know what to write :-/
5) The minute I put photos of kids, they fall sick (Jinx??)
6) Even if I put a post too little people look, like or comment back! :-((
7) It hurts to see people happy around me when I am sad (haan? Whatta sadist I am)
8) Instigates jealousy of people who go around the world (Ambaani nahin... sirf bhambani hai, bhambaani...!!)
9) Reminds me of some bitter incident in the past when I see people in FB - mostly me hurting them than the other way
10) Got into Whatsapp actively - anyway it is family members naa... finding this easier than FB

But ... am being mocked by Chinni that I have become too old to use FB thats why deactivated it!! Podi! (go girl in Tamil but in a scolding manner)

Here is an interesting analysis here that shows the reasons for not using social medias -
Top reason being "Not relevant to my business" at 29% and surprisingly "Not familiar how it works" at 24% (Yeah no wonder the top notch CEO are still the 1990 guyz, not the millennials). But the response did not have "Jealousy" as a reason??!! May be am the only one and thus doesnt fit the graph.

Anybody wanting to deactivate theirs... here is a link to help you achieve it - https://www.facebook.com/help/214376678584711

Join the club!!

Image courtesy - http://startupmeme.com/omg-you-dont-use-facebook/ Nice post BTW, but am NOT reactivating my account.

While pondering about this, something struck in my mind. The language is getting improvised day by day based on the current trend and youngsters taste. So why all the way say... Deactivated and Reactivated instead of just making it 'Dactivate' and 'Ractivate'?? duh!

Amritsar, I love it! - 2

Just realized that I have left the first post with a "-to be continued", so here is the completion for that part.

The second part of Amritsar is about the Golden Temple visit and Jallianwala Bagh. Before that let me give a word about the hotels. (When you google for some best hotels in particular place, you always end up with links like tripadvisor or cleartrip, etc. which just offers range of packages. The reviews are often confusing and misleading. So I always go by googling blogs where the authors like me (ahem!) will give genuine feedbacks. But gasp! even blogs have advertising motives. Anyway here is a genuine feedback that you can consider!! :) )

Our budget was nominal - around 2500 to 3000 per night. Anyway it was only one night right, so why go for packages that offer breakfast when we have planned to skip it for the sake of visiting Golden Temple? That was the thought we had. But you DO NOT get nice hotels for that range, I warn you. We stopped by several hotels near Golden Temple, and also on the Amritsar Model town - Golden tulip, Best Western, etc. There is no Lemon Tree to our disappointment. Then we decided to take Golden Tulip for Rs. 3500 per night with breakfast. But before checkin we thought of having coffee at Coffee Day. Our GPS kept on taking us here and there in the Shopping Complex area. Then finally we got down at a Baskin Robbins joint that had coffee and also Pizza. We then enroute wanted to look for some other decent hotel for lesser amount. We settled with one "KK Continental" in Albert Road which was pretty close to the main road that takes us to Golden Temple. We spent too little time to write about any review here. The room that we took was small with a comfortable AC. The bathroom was clean but not so great. But I must definitely thank the hospitality that they showed. I was sick that night! Was it because of the karaabi lunch? or was it because of the journey? or the heat? or the pizzas? i dont know... but had severe stomach ache. DH hurried down at that mid night to see for any pharma. Luckily the person at the reception gave a over the counter medicine that helped my twitching tummy some relief. Was able to sleep that night. And then just took bath and left for the day. Didnt have coffee maker, had to ask for hot water to prepare. But definitely a good hotel for moderate budget.

Our day dawned in Golden Temple. The streets are well designed to reach the temple without any
problem. A big fly over took us straight into the parking lot which was a bit away from the temple. An entire 4 floored building is provided for car parking. We made there by like 7:30 AM yet found it difficult to get a parking spot. We got down in the 4th floor while DH hunted for a spot in the terrace. There are PLENTY of battery operated tuk tuks which help us by taking to the temple for like Rs. 100. While we were waiting for DH in one vehicle, an elderly person was selling the turban cloths. Simple cloth for Rs. 10 that can be used for covering the head. It is MANDATORY to cover our heads here irrespective of the religion that you may belong. Inside the temple, people literally were pouncing on those who do not cover their head. (I used my dupatta itself). Chinni and Dittu were looking cute with this head cover!! :)
Is it really very far... or did the tuk tuk guy took us through, we dont know but it was quite a long route to the temple. We reached there to see the lovely temple. It was very much crowded even at that early hour. Huge fans with supported spout that kept sprinkling water was very reviving for the scorching may month. It took at least 2 hours for us to enter and come out. They do respect kids and older people and ask them to go ahead in the crowd. Thats very kind of the Sikh community. In fact we later realised that separate
lines for women, women and children and old aged people were being kept. We kind of moved in faster at the end thanks to Dittu and her huge cry. We didnt know how to offer prayers and thus put our hands like pranaam and came out. We must be the only people to have come out of the shrine so quick!! The shrine had four entrances, all loaded with people. Devotees were sitting inside the shrine, outside, in the path way, everywhere. Songs were being sung by priests from inside as well as outside the shrine.

They kept offering the Langar but we didnt go there. The "prasadam" sweet that they offered was too good. Forgot the name of it... was like our Thiruvadhirai Kali (halwa like sweet) with lot of ghee. We were too tired to visit the other chambers of the temple. Spotted huge fish in the pond outside which is believed to be the nectar of the temple. And people taking dips.

Then we went to take our breakfast in "Shuddh Dhaba". Alas! we didnt get any food, nor proper coffee. The pooris and parathas came after what was like ever! Then the tuk tuk guy took us to some shopping. The textile warehouse shop was loaded with people.... from south! Can hear majority Tamil and Telugu languages there with lack of Hindi knowledge. I over heard a huge uncle talking to the shop keeper "This piece... this churidhar... 1000 rupees in Saravana Stores" I dont know how much did  the shop keeper offered, but sure couldnt understand the "sasta"(low price) that his customer is talking about. Another family... only the son could speak some english. Dad and mom were talking in tamil and this guy was the mediator between them. Unlike Delhi, the Punjab province have good amount of English speaking population. With my broken Hindi... I too bargained to buy nothing though :) Then we stopped by to buy some papads. Yet to try them out to see how they taste...!!

Then we proceeded to Jallianwala Bagh...

To be continued
